Chapter Eighteen

When Alex pulled up outside Helena’s house, she was surprised to see the light on in the hallway. It was one o’clock in the morning, a time when people with regular jobs were fast asleep. Then she remembered Helena had a baby. Alex doubted she’d be getting much sleep with one of those.

Alex turned the engine off and sat there, the sound of the engine cooling down her only companion. What was she doing here? That was the million-dollar question. She didn’t actually know. Alex had found herself wide awake and just felt the urge to jump in the car and drive towards Sandbanks as if in a trance. She couldn’t stay in her empty flat. She wanted to see Ka… Helena. Oh God! Why are you torturing me like this?

What were the chances that a woman who looked the spitting image of Kay would come into her life? How was she meant to cope with these feelings of want and need for a married woman? Why was the ghost of Kay still haunting her – had she not suffered enough? Obviously not. It was as if the universe was playing a perverse mind game with her, whereby it was showing her what she wanted but couldn’t have. It was such a fucked-up scenario.

Alex’s hand hovered over the key in the ignition. She couldn’t stay there all night. What if one of the neighbours grew suspicious and called the police? How ironic would that be?

Just as she turned the key, a knock on the window caused her to snap her head around to look straight into the eyes of Helena.

Alex took a quick intake of breath as Helena’s face came closer to the glass separating them. She was busted. What the fuck do I do now? Think!

And true to form, Alex couldn’t think of one excuse as she wound down the window.

‘I thought that was you,’ Helena said, as if finding the police officer on the case of your missing wife sitting outside your house at 1 a. m. was the most normal thing in the world.

She’s like Kay in so many ways.

‘Hi, I um… I didn’t see you…’

‘I’ve just arrived home. I was round at my brother’s place.’

‘Oh I see.’

Silence. Helena looked at her expectantly, as if waiting for Alex to explain what she was doing parked outside her house in the middle of the night.

‘Well I was calling round to... um… update you on a few things but didn’t realise it was so late.’

Alex was going to have to come clean about Amy’s criminal record. That was her only ‘get out of jail’ card. Otherwise she was going to look like a crazy stalker.

‘Oh right,’ Helena said. ‘Can I get in?’

‘Get in?’

Helena smiled and gestured to the passenger seat.

‘Oh sorry, yes of course.’

Alex watched as Helena made her way around the front of the car then jumped in next to her.

‘Go ahead,’ Helena said.

Alex turned to face her, struggling to maintain eye contact. She’s so beautiful just like… She stopped her thoughts abruptly and forced herself into the moment.
